Time Management

Time management is something that is extremely critical to understand when moving forward into college classes. As a senior, I have discovered lots of different ways that help me manage my time with my classes.

Some of these resources include but are not limited to:

  • Notion

  • Google Calendar

  • Post-It Notes

  • Physical Planner

  • Bullet Journal

Calendar Blocking

Everyone is different when it comes to what way works best for them in regards to time management. The most important thing I have learned is time blocking. At the beginning of the semester I create a schedule. This schedule is for every hour of the day, I ensure to fill up every  hour, even if that is just filling it with ‘down time’. Having a set structure for every part of your day helps immensely so that you do not get overwhelmed. I find that the times in my life when I am most stressed are when I do not have set plans for my days.

Limit Technology

I know that it is hard to hear this as high school students and teenagers but it is extremely important to limit technology use when trying to get work done. I find that there are really helpful apps that actually shut down your cell phone for a specific amount of time so that you can set yourself up for success. You also do not need these apps, as you can just move your phone away from yourself for a period of time. Ask a friend or parent to hold on to your phone to limit the distractions from your work. After you have separation from this technology, it will be much easier to get your homework done and then have access to your phone.

Take Breaks

While it can seem daunting when you have a ten page paper due at the week and you have not started, it is important to not overwhelm yourself  by doing too much all at once. The brain only has so much that it  can handle at the  same time. If  you work for three hours nonstop, your brain will not be able to comprehend and understand what you are doing. Work in chunks; work for 30 minutes, then take a 10 minute break, or work for 20 and take a 5 minute break.  It is only important that it works for you. You can set timers and say you are going to nonstop work for a short period of  time, then  you can time yourself on the break. This way, your brain has a second to rest and understand the content.

Spread Out The Work

Along with calendar blocking it is important to  spread out the work you need to do throughout the week. Whether it is studying or working on homework, it can become overwhelming if it is all done at the same time. In college classes, most professors tend to post the work they need you to do weeks before the due date. Put these assignments on your calendar right when you are aware of them, and block them on your calendar. You can also create a calendar reminder for a week before it is due to remind yourself of what is required for you.

In conclusion, it is important to give yourself time to relax and chill. College classes can be rough, but once you are aware of your time and put in the work, you can achieve anything you would like. I hope this helps.
