Choosing the Right Pathway

When starting to decide which pathway to go into you have to think about what you want to be when you're older or what you are interested in. What if you don’t know what you want to be when you're older yet? A good way to start out and decide which pathway to go into is to know what each pathway consists of.

The BODIES program gives you hands- on experience of working in the medical field. The first semester consists of Rotations and the Medical Intervention class. The rotations allow you to know about all the different jobs and careers that are in the medical field. Medical intervention is a class done at Metro and gives you information about the tools you may be using when you go into capstone. While also working and learning through rotations and medical interventions you are also taking college classes. You have the choice to go through Columbus State or The Ohio State University. At The Ohio State University you usually start your first semester taking Biology 1114 and Medical Terminology. If you decide to go through Columbus State you tend to start off taking English and Biology. Throughout the semester you also take many field trips to healthcare facilities and nursing schools to get hands-on experiences. If you are interested in learning more about going into healthcare, BODIES is the fit for you!

The DESIGN program is split into two parts based on semesters like BODIES. The first semester you take an engineering design and principles class and have job rotations exploring fields in computer science and engineering. The second semester you start to complete a capstone project with a mentor and get hands-on experience of engineering or computer science. In the first semester you usually take Advanced Mechatronics, Advisory and Rotations. Advanced Mechatronics is a no remediation course and is like mechatronics but the 2.0 version. Advisory is similar to advisory in the other pathways. You focus on check-ins with your teacher about how your classes are going and what you may need help with. Rotation is when a speaker comes in to talk about their career and give you information that may interest you in wanting to focus on that career for your capstone. These are not the only three classes you can take. The DESIGN program also gives you the flexibility to take college courses. These courses consist of language, english, math or a science course you would like to take. This program also let’s you take any Metro courses you haven't taken if you don’t want to take college courses just yet.

The GROWTH/ ENERGY pathway is a variety of different things. In this pathway you learn about business, agriculture and whatever else you show interest in. This pathway is a great way to find what you are passionate about if it's not medical or engineering based. The GROWTH/ ENERGY program covers a wide variety of interests and since it's not based one like BODIES and DESIGN it can stretch to include many other interests in careers. The first semester, like the other pathways, focuses on rotations, advisory and completing tasks that teach you day to day things you may complete as an adult. The rotations cover many interests that students have. They bring in multiple different careers not only in business and agriculture but also in law and physcology. Advisory consists of check ins with your teacher to make sure your classes are going well and you are staying on top of work. Not only do you learn about different careers, you also are learning about how to write resumes, how to be a good employer, how to write college applications, and many more. These are not the only classes you take, you can also take college courses at Columbus State, The Ohio State University or Metro. The Metro courses are classes you have not taken yet if there aren’t any then you usually take college classes. The college classes you can take consist of a language, math, english, science or classes that focus on careers that interest you. These consist of intro to business or agriculture communication. The second semester like the other programs is working with a mentor and getting hands-on experience in a career to complete your capstone.

Hopefully by now you have a good understanding of what the different pathways consist of. Now the next step is to start to think about what interests you and making sure you have the requirements to start a pathway.
